The Ada Rave Trio is presenting their new CD the sea, the storm and the full moon released on the Clean Feed label. This drumless trio put together by saxophone player Ada Rave (Argentina, based in Amsterdam since 2013), mixes two fascinating musicians who had never played together before: Nicola L. Hein (de) on prepared guitar and Wilbert De Joode (nl) on contrabass. The result is a trio with a unique narrative, a musical dialogue that is coined by fast, telepathic interaction and energetic interplay, never losing nuance and awareness for subtle impulses and sudden changes.
Ada Rave is from Buenos Aires and grew up in Patagonia. After having been a very active saxophonist in the jazz and free improvisation scene in Argentina, she decided to move to Europe to explore the rich field of free improvisation scenes and to know more about their tradition. Based in Amsterdam in 2013 she immediately integrated the improvised music community and nowadays performs around Europe with several projects and collaborations and continues developing her personal approach to improvised music.
Nicola L. Hein from Düsseldorf is a very active guitar player, soundartist, philosopher and composer on the german/internationally scene of improvised music. He is a fascinating young musician that plays acoustic and electric guitar with his hands and plectrum but also with a lot of different objects: screws, rulers, iron wool, violin bow, abrasive paper, magnets and many other objects which are part of his musical vocabulary.
Wilbert De Joode was born in Amsterdam and is a veritable research scientist of bass pizzicato and bowing techniques. A self-taught musician. De Joode is currently one of the most active bass players on the European improvised music circuit. His individual style and musicality transforms the double bass into an equal partner in the most varied ensembles. A personal tone colour, exploration of the outer registers, quirky improvisations and the use of gut strings contribute to an instantly recognisable and intriguing sound.
Argentinian pianist Nicolás Chientaroli moved to Amsterdam with his wife Ada Rave in 2013. Together they quickly became an integral part of the music community not only because of their improvisational prowess but also for hosting a number of new music series in town including the Impro Jam and Instant Music Day.
As a pianist Nico has developed a very personal way of playing, exploring and expanding the boundaries of his instrument. In reviews his music has been described as a “magnificent and extraordinary journey of sound. Some improvisations enable beautifully structured and impressively melodic textures to surface.”
Nicolás is the second musician Doek has invited to perform solo at The Present is Present, the other being George Hadow (who, like Nico, first came to the Netherlands to attend the Dutch Impro Academy).
Expect to witness an improviser whose fantasy knows no bounds!
